Frederick Valentin charcoal portrait drawing

'Frederick' 2015
11x14" Charcoal on Mi-Teintes paper

I've been an admirer of model Frederick Valentin for some time now and had thought about drawing a study of him. He has that timeless look, mysterious, dark, and handsome. But it was that mysterious quality about his modeling that really caught my eye and is a perfect subject for dramatic chiaroscuro lighting that I love so much. The pencil strokes seemed to flow so easily over the beautifully chiseled forms of his intense expression, sculpting it from a flat surface into a direct gaze that seems to drive right through me.
